This nominal declension is reflected in the dative plural pronoun to/for them, ihnen, instead of ihn" masculine, accusative.

The word Ihnen is the dative of the polite personal pronoun Sie, meaning to" you. You can't' use a dative personal pronoun before a noun. The same applies to ihnen without a capital, which would mean to" them, from sie they.

up vote 3 down vote. In those situations where I feel that it is necessary to use the polite forms Sie, Ihnen, I would never use a contraction of that kind. Wie" geht es Ihnen" is the appropriate thing to say.
